Vietnam: Minimum salary increased from 1 January 2008

Decrees 166 and 168 on common minimum salary and minimum salary for Vietnamese employees working for foreign invested enterprises ("FIEs") and other foreign organizations operating in Vietnam were issued on 16 November 2007.
 
The common minimum salary will increase from VND 450,000 to VND 540,000 per month and shall be applicable to employees of the government, stated owned enterprises and domestic enterprises.
 
The minimum salary for Vietnamese employees working for FIEs is divided into three levels depending on the location of the enterprises as follows:
 
  Current regulations Effective 1 January 2008
Urban districts of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi VND 870,000 VND 1 million (approximate to US$62.30)
Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City's rural districts, and in certain districts of surrounding provinces such as Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Vung Tau, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, etc. VND 790,000 VND 900,000 (approximate to US$56.10)
Other localities which are not defined above VND 710,000 VND 800,000 (approximate to US$49.80)
